ECTACOInc.CO.UK | jetBook Color E-ink reader first look

Reviewed by          Andrew Williams
17 January 2012

There are plenty of colour ebook readers around, but they invariably use LCD screens. This means low battery life, more eyestrain and a worse experience in direct sunlight than their E-ink counterparts, like Amazon’s Kindle. E-ink Corporation, the company behind all the top ereader screens, already has a colour version of its own screen tech though, and it was showing it off in the Ectaco jetBook at CES 2012. Read on to find out whether it’s any good or not.

The Ectaco jetBook reader is different to most ereaders found on UK shelves. Its screen is 9.7in across and its resolution 1,600 x 1200 pixels. Currently the only colour E-Ink reader available across the world, according to its maker, it’s easy to call this the most advanced ereader yet.jetBook 1

However, it has deliberately marketed itself into a niche. The E-ink rep told us that it’s primarily though-of as an educational tool, for kids to view textbooks on. From a user experience perspective, this angle holds out too.

The Ectaco Jetbook Color isn’t very quick compared with a Kindle or the latest Sony ereader, and page turns can feel laboured. But when its pixel density, 206dpi, is so much greater than the reader norm of 166dpi – resulting in sharper text – and it offers the techie holy grail of colour E-ink, it’s an interesting signpost of what’s to come.
jetBook 2

The E-ink Corporation’s solution to colour ereading is very similar to its current black and white model, used in all the most popular readers. It works using dark and light microcapsules that are brought to the surface to form images and text.  There have been various generations of the tech – Vizplex and Pearl the most notable – but the jetBook’s Triton screen adds colour filters to extend the palette beyond the 16 shades of grey currently supported.

However, as you can tell from this close-up of the jetBook’s screen, the technology has a way to go. The limited contrast of E-ink becomes all the more apparent when dealing with colour, resulting in muted tones that at best resemble low-quality newsprint. jetBook
The screen is sharp, but colours are muted

This is problematic because the key functions we’d initially image for a colour reader – magazine and comic book (graphic novel, if you must) reading – will be stymied by this imaging limitation. E-ink was quite open about this problem, and was even up for discussing the relative merits of its colour rivals, Mirasol’s colour screens top of our particular list.

Mirasol’s solution offers better colour reproduction, but worse battery life at decent brightness levels. Seeing E-ink’s colour tech in action, we can only conclude that it still has some work to go before reaching the level of quality we’re after – and given the small increments in contrast achieved over the past five years, it may take a while. The Ectaco jetBook sells for £379.95 and the same hardware has also been spotted bearing the Hanvon brand. Drop us a line below in the comments in you’re eagerly awaiting a usable colour E-ink solution.

With a larger screen and slower operation, the Ectaco jetBook isn’t going to lure us away from our Kindles and Sony Readers any time soon, but its use of a colour E-ink screen is fascinating. The mediocre level of colour reproduction won’t make it palatable for a mainstream gadget-buying audience, but fingers crossed we’ll get there one day.

are passed through rigorous exams to ensure durability and overall lifespan.

The sleek and durable design is available
in 2 colors, black and white. The front side is covered with an antibacterial

recommended by leading educators. The jetBook Color has 32GB of space designated
for eTextbooks, interactive programs, homework, classwork, exams, notes,
schedules, and more. Each student’s jetBook is individually connected to a
teacher’s unit. A teacher can send notes, grades, exams, tests, assignments,
parent’s notes to each student’s unit in the class using a secured communication
technology. Students can pass their homework or written and verbal tests back to
the teacher’s unit securely as well. The parents can view all students’ class
and homework by using a WEB-based Parent Console. The jetBook Color is intended
to be used in the US educational system starting 2012.

Currently, states  across the US are mandating a switch to an eTextbook format over the original paper textbook method to cut costs and limit the destruction of forests. The
jetBook Color holds thousands of books, study courses and tests to provide an
effective way of remote education for those who temporarily cannot attend  school. Students are ready to move into the future and not carry 25 pound  backpacks every day.

JetBook Color has a specifically optimized user  interface to enable teachers to have tools for managing students. It’s equipped with a secure communication control module that assures teachers their messages to students and parents reach the intended recipients. Each parent can see a real time graph of their children’s performance in school or at home and contact  teachers if needed.

The jetBook Color will provide an immensely positive change to the current educational market by cutting costs dramatically for schools and parents, and reduce the impact on our environment. With a collective amount of know-how and unique technology, the Ectaco jetBook Color is the next generation device to be implemented across schools in the US.

ECTACO and Hanvon

The purpose of electronics trade shows is to give manufacturers a chance to show off  a little, to bring the best that they’ve got and sometimes, to bring the best that they don’t have just yet. At the January 2011 CES expo in Las Vegas, Chinese e-reader and tablet developer Hanvon teasingly announced the upcoming  release of their color e-ink reader; ditto their presence at BEA in late May, but those devices, originally slated to launch in China in March and release to North America later this year, are as of yet still unavailable to consumers eagerly awaiting the opportunity to use the technology that they got to
experiment with briefly at those events. “Hanvon is currently working on several new e-reader models, including the world’s first monochromatic 200 dpi  e-ink reader and the world’s first color e-ink reader. The Hanvon E920 monochromatic 200 dpi e-reader will be released first in the domestic Chinese market towards the end of July. Chinese consumers can anticipate the Hanvon C9 color e-ink model shortly thereafter in the fall. Both models, showed at CES in January, are nearing completion and will be available soon,” comments Billy  Hanafee, Marketing Manager for Hanvon’s International Business Department. And
the anticipated E920 will certainly live up to the hype, as it supports seven different file types, utilizes the Opera web browser, supports Hanvon’s handwriting capabilities, and features a micro SD card slot for more storage, all encased in a 9.7” screen and weighs in at just over 500 grams. Hanvon has  enjoyed a dynamic working relationship with Ectaco, manufacturer of the jetBook series of e-readers which were also showcased at this year’s BookExpo. While Ectaco has worked to develop the firmware for the Hanvon devices, the two companies have collaborated on a number of educationally-designed e-readers for elementary through secondary educational settings. These devices, notably the jetBook Color and the jetBook K-12, are already in place in some markets and should be available for schools in the U.S., China, and Eastern Europe for the upcoming school  year.

“The jetBook K-12 will have certain hardware and software features designed for students, whereas the C9 will be intended for consumer e-reader,” adds Hanafee. By focusing on the specific needs of its users in all markets, Hanvon is able to design its devices around the features its readers will use  most, unlike developers who market one-size-fits-all devices to  consumers.

ЕСТАСО: Another country embarks on the road of global informatization of education.

After the beginning of the two projects on the introduction of the high school of new media education in the USA and the Ukraine, jointly with the company ЕСТАСО (JetBook K-12) , another country entered on this way. This Is South Korea.

South Korea announced this week that it plans to spend over $ 2 billion developing digital textbooks, replacing paper in all of its schools by 2015. Students would access paper-free learning materials from a cloud-based system, supplementing traditional content with multimedia on school-supplied tablets. The system would also enable homebound students to catch up on work remotely – they won’t be practicing taekwondo on a virtual mat, but could participate in math or reading lessons while away from school, for example.
“We don’t expect the shift to digital textbooks to be difficult as students today are very accustomed to the digital environment,” a ministry official said.
Technology and the Internet has revolutionized education all across the globe. While South Korea is the first to declare a country-wide plan to shift to digital textbooks, it shouldn’t come as surprise to see other countries follow suit seeing as digital content is slowly taking over traditional media.
The digital textbooks will contain the contents of ordinary textbooks and various reference resources such as multimedia and FAQs to help students understand the materials better. The government also wants to build a cloud computing system in all schools, so that users can access a database of all digital textbooks and choose what they want from their tablet PCs
It is not clear yet who will undertake the implementation of this project, but in some of the articles is a potential contractor is the company Samsung.

ECTACO jetBook K-12. The worlds first educational eBook reader.

We are proud to announce our brand new jetBook K-12 eReader designed for use in an educational setting. Our vision is a classroom without heavy textbooks, huge backpacks and notes scattered all over the place. The K-12 is the result of months of research and development and a ton of feedback from some of our current clients in the educational field (yes you guys will be getting a free one when it comes out  )

Some of my favorite highlights: (Most programs are interactive with speech recognition!!)
-SAT prep courses.
-Speed Reading Program.
-Language teaching programs.
-Interactive periodic table of elements.
-Multiple calculators (Graphing, Accounting, Loan, Scientific).
-C-Pen OCR. Scanning and translating text. (Included)

Other great features:
-Support for almost any format including Adobe DRM.
-50 State reading list.
-Bio, Geo, Earth Sci, Math Reference guide.
-Language translation features.
-Much more than i can list here…

What will the K-12 cost?: We have not finalized the price.

What about the price justification?:
-SAT Preparation course= $600 – $1,100
-Speed reading = $40 – $80 for software.
-Text translator = For an accurate one $99 per language. (free online software is very inaccurate.)
-Language teaching with Speech recognition = $350
-C-pen Scanner. OCR = $150
-Graphing Calculator = $70 – $110
-Accounting Calculator = $70 – $100
-Oxford talking dictionary = $170 – $200
-Electronic Flash cards = $50 per language.
-eBook reader with multilingual and multi format support = $50
- Spanish and English Grammar Course = $80 – $150.
-There are many more programs and multiple languages but I think I proved my point at a minimum.

Total = $1,729 – $2,389. And this is an underestimation.

ECTACO: Do kids like the jetBook Mini? Why don’t you ask them…

By Jerry Cimadomo.

I saw something quite amazing at the ITSE conference just recently and I wanted to share my experience. At this conference in Philadelphia PA tons of companies came to show off their technology for use in schools and other educational settings. There were tons of exhibitors with loads of software and hardware solutions to “help” students learn. I couldn’t help but notice the majority of the exhibitors were offering boring solutions which seemed to be geared towards teachers and not the students.

In the middle of my second day I noticed a crowd of students walking down our istle, without thought they ignored the $3000 interactive projectors, organizational software and even colorful interactive computer games. When they arrived at our booth they came to a screeching halt, I had to make sure we didn’t leave candy on the table! Each one of them grabbed for and started scrutinizing the vibrant jetBook Mini; intrigued they started asking questions about eReaders, how it worked and even where to get one. I quickly grabbed my camera to capture the moment. After a few minutes their chaperone was hurrying them along so they wouldn’t miss anything.

I feel like there is, and always has been, a big disconnect between students and teachers. The best teacher is one who can see through a student’s eyes and understands what’s interesting to them. Quite frankly, a task like reading is found to be boring my many younger students, and with high-tech items like 3D TV’s, video games and movies we can’t blame the students for being uninterested. The stimulation level is a mis-match, it’s like asking a person who just sky dived from several thousand feet to play a game of chess. Certainly they won’t find it as exhilarating.

Pairing cool technology like the jetBook to such a low-stimulus task like reading is the perfect way to elicit interest and learning. This acquisition of knowledge through reading is one of the building blocks to a better education and a successful life. As Harry Truman put it “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.”
